In Spain, and here in France, the buildings seem to be designed to keep out intruders (this can even be seen in modern buildings!) Tim explained that these were arrow slits in the wall for archers. Ahh, all that interest in history/warfare can sure come in handy when wandering through old Europe, eh?!
